XV. John Macleod of that ilk, Herries, Dunvegan, &c. commonly called
John More, on account of his remarkable size and great strength of body.
He was infeft in the whole estate of the family upon a precept from
the chancery, dated 9th November 1626.
He afterwards got a charter under the great seal, o the lands and
baronies of Dunvegan, Glenelg, &c. dated 11th June 1634.
He was a man of honour and merit, and sincerely attached to the
interest of the royal family, which king Charles I was so sensible of,
that he wrote him a most kind and friendly letter, promising him his
constant favour, protection, &c. dated at Durham, 2d May 1639.
He married Sybilla, daughter of Kenneth lord Mackenzie of Kintail, by
whom he had two sons and five daughters.
1. Roderick, his heir.
2. John, who succeeded his brother.
1st daughter, Mary, married to sir James Macdonald of Slate, baronet.
2. Marian, married to Ronald Macdonald captain of the clan Ronald, and
was mother of Captain Alan of clan Ronald, who was killed at
Sheriffmuir, anno 1715.
3. Giles, married, 1st, to sir Alan Maclean third baronet of Dowart;
2dly, to _____ Campbell of Glenderoal.
4. Sybilla, married to Thomas Fraser of Beaufort, and was mother of
Simon eleventh lord Lovat.
5. Margaret, married to sir James Campbell of Lawers, without issue.
This John was a man of probity and benevolence, and was at much pains
in civilizing his country. he continued steady in his loyalty to the king
as long as he lived, and dying in September 1649, was succeeded by his
eldest son, Roderick Macleod.
