Sir John Cheetham MacLeod was born, on 23rd January 1831, at Mt.
Lavinia in Ceylon, and was educated at Mr. Wallace''s School, St. Andrews,
and Perth Academy. Through the influence of Sir John MacDonald, Colonel
of the Black Watch, he received a commission in the 42nd Royal
Highlanders, and joined the regiment in Bermuda, and afterwards went with
it to Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the Crimean War, Captain MacLeod took part
in all the actions in which the 42nd was engaged. He was mentioned in
despatches and received the Crimean medal with clasps, the French Legion
of Honour medal, and also the Turkish medal. He was promoted Brevet
Major. In the Indian Mutiny, he took part in all the major battles, and was
twice mentione in despatches. He was promoted Brevet Lieut.-Colonel in
1861, and was made a Companion of the Bath (C.B.) in 1871. In the
Ashanti War of 1873-4, he commanded the advance guard of Sir Garnet
Wolseley''s force, and took part in all the battles of the campaign, at the
end of which he was knighted for his military skill, and bravery and long
service. As Major-General, Sir John Cheetham MacLEod commanded the
troops in Ceylon (1882-7), and acted as Governor for six months in 1885.
He married, in 1861, as his first wife, Emily Maria Douglas, daughter of
Abercromby Dick of Tullimet, Perthshire, with issue.
Sir John Cheetham MacLeod''s first wife died on 2nd April 1882 and he
married on 12th September 1883 his second wife, Dora MacDonald (who
died in 1924), daughter of Dr. John Graham MacDonald, Bart., M.D., F.R.S.E.
Sir John Cheetham MacLeod had issue by his second marriage.
