The Right Honorable Iain Norman MacLeod, PC., MP. [For a full and
sympathetic biography of Iain MacLeod, see Nigel Fisher (1973) IAIN
MACLEOD.] He was born 11th November 1913 and was educated at Fettes
College and Caius College, Cambridge (BA 1935). He joined the Duke of
Wellington Regiment and was Major in the 50th Division 1944. Elected
MP for Enfield West 1950, then Minister for Health 1952-55, Minister of
Labour and National Service 1955-59. Secretary of State for the
Colonies 1959-61. Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Leader of
the House of Commons 1961-63. Made Editor of the Spectator 1963-65,
Director Lombard Banking 1963 and Chariman Television ADvisers 1963
and had a number of publications. Following the General Election in 1970
he was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, but died of a massive
heart attack in July 1970. He married Evelyn Hester Blois, daughter of
the Rev. Gervaise V. Blois and his wife, the Hon. Hester Murray
Parkington. Evelyn was made a Life Peeress, Baroness MacLeod of Borve,
in 1971. She is the first woman Deputy Lieutenant for Greater London
and was JP for Middlesex-Edmonton for 24 years.
She has also been Chairman of the Juvenile Court, a member of the
Parole Board, Lord Chancellor''s Advisory Committee, National Gas
Consumer''s Council, Metrication Board, Independent Broadcasting
Authority, and is currently Chairman of League of Hospital Friends,
National Association of Widows, "Crisis at Christmas" and is Governor of
Queenswood School.
