In the generally accepted MacLeod pedigree there is obviously the name
of a chief or a chief''s father missing. Sir George MacKenzie, who took a
warm interest in the pedigree of his MacLeod forebears, for obvious
reasons, and was indeed a very able person, claims that there was a
chief, Malcolm, between Torquil IV and Roderick VI of Lewis. Sir George
is the only authority for this. The absence of evidence in this respect
could be due to the loss of important documents which Sir George had
seen. On the other hand, Malcolm may have died before his father, who in
turn would be succeeded by Malcolm''s son, Roderick. This would explain
why Malcolm''s name does not appear on extant important documents as
well as providing the missing generation in the hierarchy of the chiefs
of Siol Thorcuil.
!CAVEAT: The absence of any primary evidence beyond the word of Sir
George MacKenzie makes this person''s existence suspect, if not doubtful.
The birth of Roderick, who does appear in early primary documents, is
well within the possible lifetime of Torquil, IV of Lewis. In deference
to Sir George MacKenzie and Alick Morrison, this generation is included
here, with this disclaimer.
!REVISION: As seen from the following references, Major Loudoun
MacLeod has revised this genealogy. Morrison had this Malcolm as a
separate individual as a son of ______ (RIN ___), and Fifth Chief of the
MacLeods of Lewis; this has been revised -- his is no longer a chief, and
is now the son of Torquil, IV of Lewis. This provided a real, historical
person for the "missing generation" mentioned above.

Malcolm (Gille-caluim Beag), ...was killed in 1406 at the battle of
Tuiteam Tarbhach in Sutherland. [This battle was due to the
"ill-treatment" of his sister "Sidheag, who married Angus MacKay of
Strathnaver. "Her alleged ill-treatment as a widow cased the Macleod
attack on the MacKays which resulted in the battle...."
