Very little is known about John, who was the first MacLeod of
Colbecks; he had an estate in Jamaica where he amassed a fortune as a
planter before returning to Scotland. On 17th March 1762, at the Lyon
Court, Edinburgh, he matriculated arms as Chief of the MacLeods of
Lewis. He married (1) the widow of Iain Dubh Mackinnon of Mackinnon
(who died on 7th May 1756), Janet, daughter of Malcolm MacLeod X of
Raasay, and his wife Mary, daughter of Alexander MacKenzie, III of
Applecross, with issue.
John MacLeod, I of Colbecks, returned to the West Indies, where he
married (2), on 28th November 1773, Margaret, daughter of Roderick
MacLeod, W.S., of the Luskentyre family, [MGC (II) pp. 32-35 (version 1)
or pp. 85-87 (version 2).] apparently without issue. John died on 13th
May 1775 [So MacKinnon, CMM no. 15, p. 484; A. MacKenzie, p. 386, says
that he died on the 12th May.] his obituary appearing in THE SCOTSMAN.
His widow, Margaret, subsequently married, without issue, the Hon. John
Grant, Chief Justice of Jamaica (who acquired Kilgraston in Perthshire).
