John MacLeod of Garrabost (Seoc mac Ghoinich mhic Sheorais), like his
father, joined the Hudson Bay Company (sailing from Stornoway in July
1811 to do so) with whom he had a notable career in opening up the West.
Particular mention may be made of his help in saving the Selkirk
Settlement, on the Assiniboine River, from attack by Indians and
halfbreeds. It was around that incident that the Scottish Canadian
author Frederick Niven wrote his novel entitled "Mine Inheritance". John
MacLeod married Barbara, daughter of William Morison.
