John MacLeod, known as Iain na Tuaighe (John of the Axe). He carried
off Janet, wife of his uncle Roderick MacLeod X of Lewis and afterwards
married her. By Janet MacKenzie, John had several sons and a daughter.
The sons died in the Massacre in the Island of Isay but the daughter
married Alexander Roy, eldest son of Hector Cam, son of Hector Roy
MacKenzie I of the MacKenzies of Gairloch, [A. MacKenzie (1889) pp. 346,
357.] with issue a son Hector nick-named "the Bishop", who married his
second cousin, a daughter of Malcolm MacLeod III of Raasay, with issue, a
large family of sons and daughters. One of the daughters married Murdo
MacKenzie V of Achilty, without issue. [A. MacKenzie (1889) pp.
506-507]. John of the Axe married, as his second wife, a daughter of
Allan MacLeod of the MacLeods of Gairloch and sister of Ruairidh
Nimhneach (Roderick the venomous), with issue. Roderick the Venomous,
who happened neither to be the eldest son of, nor the lawful successor to
MacLeod of Gairloch, determined not only to open up the succession to
Gairloch MacLeods (his own brother''s children), children of John of the
Axe by his first wife, Janet MacKenzie, and the children of Alexander
MacLeod II of Raasay, to a feast in the Island of Isay, [For an account of
the Massacre of Isay, see Gregory (1881/1975) pp. 211-213. See also A.
MacKenzie (1889) pp. 348-349.] off the coast of Waternish in Skye,
professing to each that he had important matters to communicate to him.
All accepted the invitation, except a son of Alexander MacLeod of Raasay
who was being fostered away from home by a devoted clansman, Malcolm
MacNeil. After the feast, Roderick called his guests separately into an
adjoining room, where each one as he entered was stabbed with dirks by
a band of villains, posted inside the room. All the sons of John of the
Axe by his first wife, those of Alexander II of Raasay, except the boy
already mentioned, and the sons of MacLeod of Gairloch were foully
murdered. [A. MacKenzie (1889) pp. 348-349, and Nicolson (2930) pp.
355-367 & 437-438.] This massacre took place about 1568.
