Was born, on 23rd January 1882, at Vass, Western Australia, and was
educated at Brighton Grammar School, Brighton, Victoria. After leaving
school, he took up pastoral pursuits at Merino Downs. Later he managed
Noranside cattle station for his uncle, Alexander Magnus MacLeod. In
1907, he returned to Merino Downs. On the outbreak of the First World
War, he enlisted in the 13th Light Horse, and served in Gallipoli. For a
time after the War he resided on the family property at Minilya, but he
sold out his interest in it in 1920, and purchased his grandfather''s old
estate, Castlemaddie, Victoria, where he lived for the rest of his life.
There he engaged in rearing stud Jersey cattle, in grazing and dairying.
Elected a member of the Portland Legislative Council, he served on it for
thirteen years, and was president for three terms, including the
Centenary Year (1934), when the Duke of Gloucester visidted Portland.
The Hon. Hugh Vernon MacLeod was ''one of nature''s gentlemen, who
always spoke and acted in the high tradition of his illustrious family''.
He married on 3rd December 1919 Elsa, daughter of Adel Edward
Landquest, without issue. He died on the 26th September 1955, 9 days
after his brother, Donald Guy, had passed on. He was succeeded in the
Headship of the Family of Talisker by his nephew, Donald Ian Guy, the
only son of the fore-mentioned Donald Guy.
