Ewan Cameron, born in India on 18th August 1868. He was educated at
the Royal Free Grammar School, Shrewsbury, from 1880 to 1885 and the
following year he entered with his brother the Medical School of the
Westminster Hospital, where he qualified M.R.C.S. (Eng.) and L.R.C.P.
(Lond.) in 1891.
To the great pleasure of his father he decided to enter the Indian
Medical Service and for two years served in the Army Medical School at
Netley and was commissioned as Surgeon-Lieutenant on 29th January
1894.
On his arrival in India he was appointed in September 1894 to the
Punjab Frontier Force -- first as Medical Officer of the 5th Regiment of
Punjab Cavalry at Rajanpur and thereafter in 1895 of the Queen''s Own
Corps of Guides at Mardan.
On 12th march 1896 he was appointed Officiating Civil and Jail Surgeon
at Gauhati in Assam and was attached to the 33rd Regiment of Bengal
Infantry. On 29th January 1897 he became Surgeon Captain and from
November of that year he was employed as a Civil Surgeon in the Medical
Department of Eastern Bengal and Assam, at first at Aijal in the Lushai
Hills.
He came home on leave in 1898 and attended a course of lectures on
general bacteriology at his old Hospital. He returned to India on 14th
April 1899 and was appointed Officiating Civil Surgeon at Dhubri and
Dibrugarh in Assam. In 1900 he held a temporary military situation in
the Peshawar District with the 10th Regiment of Bengal Lancers (the
Duke of Cambridge''s Own) and the following year, was also attached for
duty at the Depot of the 14th (the Ferozepore Sikh) Regiment of the
Bengal Infantry.
He came home for leave again in 1902 and married on 31st March 1903
his cousin Annie, elder daughter of Edward Moore Knight of Nottingham
and his wife Elizabeth Staniland Golland. They spent their honeymoon
touring Rome, Venic, Florence, Milan and Lucerne. They had issue....
Surgeon-Captain Ewan Cameron MacLeod arrived back in India in 1903
and resumed his civil medical duties at Aijal. The following year he
returned to Gauhati as Jail Surgeon. On 29th January 1906 he was
promoted Surgeon-Major. In 1907 he and his wife visited England on
leave and toured Scotland. When he returned to India, he was appointed
Civil Surgeon at Shillong in Khasi and Jainta Hills. In 1911 he is also
additonal Civil Surgeon at Dacca in Bengal.
After a period of leave at home in 1912, he again returned to India and
was appointed Surgeon to the Darrang District in Assam. On 29th July
1913, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. After a
further period of leave in 1915, he was appointed in 1917 as Civl
Surgeon at Sibsagar and in the following year to the Lakhimpur District,
Assam.
On 7th March 1921 he went on leave for the last time and retired on 9th
February 1923 at the age of 55 after 29 years service.
During his retirement he indulged his favourite sport of fly-fishing in
the art and science of which he was an expert. He died at Bournemouth
on 31st October 1946 and his wife a year later. A plaque to his memory
can be seen on the wall of the Alasdair Ruaidh burial enclosure in the Old
Church of St. Mary''s, Kilmuir, Dunvegan, Isle of Skye.
