Donald MacDiarmid who was born in 1824, and was named after a
Scottish (Skye) friend of his father''s, Donald MacDiarmid, who left
sufficient money for his education. He graduated from South Carolina
College, Columbia, S.C. During the war between the Northern and
Southern States, Donald organized a company of volunteers, of which he
became Captain and later Major, and was known for his great courage and
bravery. He was wounded at the battle of Gettysburg, and died a few
hours later (erd July 1863) on the bank of the Potomac River. his negro
servant, Bill Rials, buried him where he died, but afterwards his widow
and Bill Rials secured his body and buried it in the family plot in
Parnassus Churchyard, Marlboro, South Carolina. His wife was Katherine
Alford, by whom he had issue.
