Biography
!SOURCE: Rev. Dr. Donald MacKinnon and Alick Morrison, THE MACLEODS:
THE GENEALOGY OF A CLAN, Section III, "Cadet Families", Edinburgh, The
Clan MacLeod Society, 1970, pp. 254-255.
Donald succeeded his father in the island of Berneray. The evidence for
his existence is to be found in the Register of the Privy Council of
Scotland. There in 1616, we discover that Sir Ruaridh Mor MacLeod of
Harris and Dunvegan had agreed to exhibit eight of his leading clansmen
as hostages to guarantee his obedience to the laws of the realm. Among
those to be exhibited, we discover the name of John MacLeod of Berneray.
His genealogy is given as ''Eane mc Rorye vc Coneill [Doneill?] Mc Eane''.
This barbarous rendering of Gaelic spelling, means John son of Roderick
son of Donald son of John. Thus John MacLeod''s great-grandfather was
John Mor 6th of Berneray tradition. His grandfather was Donald d7th of
Berneray, born about 1522. There is no further information of him
beyond the name. He was married with issue, at least Roderick, who
succeeded.
