Captain Norman MacLeod, son of Alexander (son of Norman, son of
Norman MacLeod of Drynoch (alias Tarmad Mor na Mart). Captain
Norman''s mother was Sarah, daughter of John MacPhee, nicknamed ''Old
Gibraltar'', who had served in the 71st Highlanders during the heroic
siege of Gibraltar 1779-1783. [Sir George Elliot, Lord Heathfield, the
heroic defender of Gibraltar developed stomach trouble and was
persuaded by Captain Alexander MacLeod of the MANSFIELD to holiday in
Berneray, Harris, in order to recuperate.] During this siege, the soldiers
at one time were reduced to eating thistles. The enemy apparently
covered their ships with wool and later leather, which the bullets of the
defenders could not penetrate. MacPhee thought of a method of defeating
this stratagem by making the bullets red hot. The idea proved most
effective. ''Old Gibraltar'' came to Canada and died there. Mary and
