Angus...met the Prince at Glenfinnan with his sons and as many men as
he was able to influence in favour of the Prince. He fought in all the
battles of the 1715 and 1745 Risings. At Culloden, his sons, with the
exception of one, who remained at home, were killed. After the battle,
Angus MacLeod returned to the field to look for his sons. As he left the
battlefield, after discovering that his sons had been slain, he was
attacked by a party of English dragoons, by whom he was killed, but not
before he had cut down several of his assailants. A daughter, Margaret,
was married to Hugh MacRae, youngest son of Alexander MacRae of
Inverinate ("History of the MacRaes," p. 132). The surviving son of Angus
MacLeod was Olaus.

Angus, who was born about 1694, was a keen and devoted Jacobite, and,
in the 1745 Rising, was present at Glenfinnan on the day of which the
Highland Clans gathered to welcome Prince Charles Edward Stuart, and
brought with him as many men as he was able to influence in favour of
the Prince. He and his 6 sons, with the exception of Olaus, the youngest,
were at Culloden. After the battle, when the clans, disorganised and
confused, were scattered, Angus returned to the field to search for his
sons, whom he found among the slain. As he was leaving, he was
attacked by a party of English dragoons, and in the struggle that ensued
he was killed, but not before he had cut down several of his assailants.
Of his family, only two are known.
Angus MacLeod, 2nd of the MacLeods of Swordlan, was killed, as already
noted, on the battlefield of Culloden, and was succeeded at Swordlan by
his surviving son.
