!BIOGRAPHY: Sir Robert Douglas of Glenbervie, Baronet, THE BARONAGE
OF SCOTLAND, Edinburgh, 1798, p. 382.
!BIOGRAPHY: Rev. Dr. Donald MacKinnon and Alick Morrison, THE
MACLEODS--THE GENEALOGY OF A CLAN, Section II, Edinburgh, The Clan
MacLeod Society, 1968, pp. 36-37, 38.
He was MacLeod''s factor in Harris on two occsions and the first period
lasted from 1726 to 1735. He appears as one of the forty-one witnesses
for Berneray in the Grianam Case 1765-1766, over the controverted
marches between between Harris and North Uist in the Court of Session.
In that case he provided valuable, precise and interesting information on
the history of the island. He stated that his grandfather Sir Norman
entered on his liferent in Berneray in 1633 and that he died in 1705; that
he was succeeded in the tack by "his Lady" for one year and his father
(William MacLeod of Berneray and Luskintyre) to 1730. He further stated
that "he himself came from school in the year 1720 and lived with his
father in Berneray to 1726 and he lived with his father five or six
months at a time before 1720". He succeeded Donald MacLeod, the Old
Trojan, in the tack of Unish in Skye from 1730 until 1738, when he
succeeded his father at Luskintyre which he gave up in 1769 and seems
to have settled in Stornoway. The tack of Unish was now given to
Norman MacLeod, the eldest son of the Old Trojan. Alexander constructed
the "chappel" to his father at St. Clement''s churchyard in Rodel as well
as the inscribed tombstone to his memory. Captain Barlow of the Buffs
believed that Alexander was "well affected" to the Hanoverian
Government during the Forty Five. At least, he did not join the Prince''s
army! He married Margaret Morrison, who seems to have been more than
a match for Donald MacLeod, the Old Trojan of Berneray, who describes
her in no flattering terms. For some reason, unknown, her name seems to
have been excised from the tombstone erected by her husband to William
MacLeod, his father. There were nineteen children of this marriage but
most of them seem to have died young.
Alexander MacLeod II of Luskintyre was succeeded in the representation
of the family by his eldest surviving son, John, of whom nothing is
known. he probably died shorlty after his father.
