Born on 9th January 1766, joined the Bengal Army, receiving his
commission in 1783. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 7th
April 1793, Captain on 8th January 1798, Major on 25th July 1810,
Lieut.-Colonel on 15th February 1818, Colonel on 5th June 1825 and
Brigadier General on 3rd December 1829. He was created a Companion of
the Bath (C.B.) on 3rd February 1817. In a General Order dated 17th
February 1827, Brigadier General Alexander MacLeod was thanked by the
Commander in Chief "for his zeal as shown in the discipline of the
Artillery", and in the following year he was knighted for his excellent
services at the head of the Artillery Department. He died at Dum Dum on
the 20th August 1831. He was unmarried.
