commanded the British Forces at the Battle of Maida in 1806, when to
the surprise of the world, ''the veterans of Napoleon fled before the
British steel''. [SIDELIGHTS ON HIGHLAND HISTORY, p. 202.] He was
knighted and had the title Count of Maida conferred on him for his
services. Lieut.-General Sir John Stewart, Count of Maida, died
unmarried.
