She was his second wife. Charles MacSween had been for a time factor
of the MacLeod estates, and afterwards tacksman of Bernisdale, Snizort,
Skye. In 1766, he succeeded Allan MacDonald of Kingsburgh as factor for
Sir Alexander MacDonald. He proved a very untrutworthy factor, [Letter
from Allan MacDonald of Kingsburgh to John MacKenzie of Delvin in
Muniment Room, Dunvegan Castle.] for, at the end of his first year in the
factorship, having collected all the money on which he could lay his
hands, he absconded to the West Indies, accompanied by his wife, and the
four sons of a former marriage. He died in poor circumstances in 1774
in Philadelphia. His widow, Catherine MacLeod, was some years later
living in the Province of Quebec, from which she wrote to Norman
MacLeod of Dunvegan regarding money matters. [MACSWEEN PAPERS in
Muniment Room, Dunvegan Castle.] That is the last we hear of her.
