William is described in 1720 as ''heir to his father'', [CLANRANALD
PAPERS, Muniment Room, Dunvegan Castle.] and after his father''s death
as ''nearest and lawful heir male of the deceased Roderick MacLeod of
Hammir his father''. [CLANRANALD PAPERS, Muniment Room, Dunvegan
Castle.] William was for a time chamberlain for Sir Alexander
MacDonald, 7th Baronet of Sleat, in North Uist, and during the troubles of
the 1745 Jacobite Rising and afterwards supported the Government. He
wrote a treatise on ''Second Sight'', under the nom de plume of ''Theophilus
Insulanus'', which was first published in 1763, and has been reprinted
several times. [The title of this curious book is: A TREATISE ON THE
SECOND SIGHT, DREAMS AND APPARITIONS: WITH SEVERAL INSTANCES
SUFFICIENTLY ATTESTED AND AN APPENDIX OF OTHERS EQUALLY
AUTHENTIC: THE WHOLE ILLUSTRATED WITH LETTERS TO AND FROM THE
AUTHOR ON THE SUBJECT OF HIS TREATISE, AND A SHORT DISSERTATION
ON THE MISCHIEVOUS EFFECTS OF LOOSE PRINCIPLES. By Thophilus

Morocco''s Close, Lawn-Market. MDCCLXIII.] He married his second
cousin, Margaret, eldest daughter of John MacLeod, 2nd of the MacLeods
of Berneray, and better known as ''Contullich'', with issue. [MacKenzie, in
his HISTORY OF THE MACLEODS (pp. 262-3), mixed up the children of
William of Hamer with those of his uncle, William of Waterstein. The
list, given [here], is from a document among the HAMER FAMILY PAPERS
at Dunvegan Castle.]
