William was known to his contemporaries as Uilleam Mac Uilleam. Sir
Roderick Mor MacLeod, who did everything in his power to repair the
injury done to the race of Iain a''Chuil Bhain by Norman MacLeod of
Dunvegan, 12th Chief, executed a deed in which he named his own
brother, Alexander, as his heir, and failing him and his heirs, settled the
MacLeod estates on William of Meidle and his heirs male. William,
however, died without male issue, and was the last in the direct line
from Iain a''Chuil Bhain. On William MacLeod''s death the representation
of the MacLeods of Waternish devolved on his uncle, Donald MacLeod of
Fasach, and his male descendants.
