William was born on 12th January 1792, and received a commission as
Ensign in the Madras Army, on 21st January 1808, on the nomination of
Sir H. Inglis, Bart. He was promoted Lieutenant on 3rd November 1813,
Captain, on 4th September 1822, in the 18th Regiment, and, on 1st May
1824, in the 35th August 1819, he was appointed Adjutant to the 1st
Battalion of the 18th Regiment, and Quarter-Master and Interpreter, on
11th April 1823. In 1835, he was appointed Superintendant of Police at
Bangalore, and remained there until his retirement, in June 1838, on the
pension of a Lieutenant-Colonel. He married, on 29th March 1823, at
Seringapatam, Anne Emma, daughter of Dr. Searle, with issue.
Lieut.-Colonel william MacLeod, who died on 28th December 1875, at
Stirling, and was buried in St. John''s Cemetery, [THE MACLEODS OF
ARNISDALE, pp. 30-1], Edinburgh, was succeeded in the representation of
the MacLeods of Arnisdale by his younger brother.
