-- THE GENEALOGY OF A CLAN, Section III, "MacLeod Cadet Families",
Edinburgh, The Clan MacLeod Society, 1970, pp. 24, 31, 34.
This branch of the MacLeod family is descended from Donald MacLeod,
smith and armourer to the MacLeods. He was, as far as we know at
present, the only son of Donald Og MacLeod, son of Donald MacLeod of the
MacLeods of Fasach [See "The MacLeods of Fasach", p. 23.] in Waternish.
Donald, the Smith and Armourer, was tacksman of Swordale, not far from
Dunvegan, and ws the progenitor of the MacLeods of Fuinary, with whom
we now deal, and also of the MacLeods of Suardal and the MacLeods of
Ebost. Donald MacLeod''s eldest son was the Rev. Norman MacLeod,
minister of Morven, and he became the first of the family of Fuinary.
Norman MacLeod was born in 1745, and was educated at King''s College,
Aberdeen, where he graduated M.A. on 30th March 1767. He was for a
time Tutor to Norman MacLeod of Dunvegan (afterwards Lieut.-General),
and thereafter schoolmaster of Duirinish. Licensed by the Presbytery of
Skye on 21st April 1771, Norman was presented by John, Duke of Argyll,
in August 1775 to the parish of Morven, and was ordained on 23rd
November of that year to this, his first and only charge. He married, on
27th July 1777, Jean (who died on 6th December 1827), daughter of John
Morrison of Achnaba, and grand-daughter of teh Rev. William Morrison, [It
is not stated in FASTI ECCLESIAE SCOTICANAE (IV, p. 120) who the Rev.
William Morrison was, but in a narrative -- THE MORRISONS OF LEWIS --
written by John MacLeod of Glen Saddell, and printed in ADVENTURES OF
ANGUS OG AND OTHER TALES (Inverness, 1940), it is said that he was a
brother of the Rev. Donald Morrison of Kilbrandon, and afterwards of
Stornoway (FASTI ECCLESIAE SCOTICANAE (VII, p. 205), descended from
the Morrison Judges of Lewis] minister of Tiree, with issue.
The Rev. Norman MacLeod and his wife, Jean Morrison, had other four
children, who died in infancy, making a total of seventeen. He died, on
5th March 1824, at the House of Fuinary, and was succeeded in the
representation of the family by his eldest surviving son.
