Norman, born in 1851, was sent to Moray House School, Edinburgh.
Thereafter he entered the book trade and in 1877 set up in business for
himself in Edinburgh. A good Gaelic scholar, he was often used as an
interpreter in cases before the Court of Session, when Gaelic was used.
He specialised in printing Gaelic books and any literary works dealing
with the Higlands. He rendered yeoman service to the Gaelic language
and literature by publishing such classics as the Gaelic works of Dr.
Norman MacLeod, CARAID NAN GAIDHEAL, and John MacKenzie''s BEAUTIES
OF GAELIC POETRY. Among other publications may be noted Dr.
Carmichael''s CARMINA GADELICA and the GESTO COLLECTION OF
HIGHLAND MUSIC. He died in 1905. He was married, with issue.
