Succeeded to Hamer. [MS. NOTES ON THE MACLEODS OF HAMER, by the
late Hector Hugh MacKenzie, Muniment Room, Dunvegan Castle.]
Norman MacLeod was tacksman of Waterstein in the Glendale district of
the parish of Duirinish, and was a very successful drover. During the
1745 Jacobite Rebellion he was a Captain of one of the MacLeod
Independent Companies, [Warrand (edit.): MORE CULLODEN PAPERS, IV
(1929), pp. 159, 170, 177.] and was admitted a burgess of Forres on 15th
January 1746. He was for a time factor for MacLeod of MacLeod. On his
cousin''s death, he became tacksman of Hamer, and give over th tack of
Waterstein to his nephew, the Rev. William Bethune, minister of
Duirinish, and, on Lieutenant William MacLeod''s death, became Head of
the family of Hamer. Norman was not married, and died at a very old age
on 1st December 1781. [SCOTS MAGAZINE.] He was succeeded in the
representation of the MacLeods of Hamer by his nephew.
