!MENTION: Rev. Dr. Donald MacKinnon and Alick Morrison, THE MACLEODS
-- THE GENEALOGY OF A CLAN, Section III, "MacLeod Cadet Families",
Edinburgh, The Clan MacLeod Society, 1970, p. 18.
John, known as Iain Dubh and also as Iain Og of Minginish [He must not
be confused with his father, Iain a''Chuil Bhain, who was also known as
Iain Og of Minginish in his younger days]… was a blood-thirsty monster,
and waded through the blood of his relatives to get possession of
Dunvegan Castle, slaughtering those in charge there, and all those who
opposed him. Although never accepted by the clansmen as successor to
his father, Iain Dubh took possession of Dunvegan Castle after his
father''s death in 1557, and held it until Norman, the youngest brother of
William 9th Chief, returned in 1559, when he was accepted as Chief.
When Norman and his friends arrived at the Castle, the warder admitted
them, but Iain Dubh''s foster-brothers raised the alarm and Iain Dubh
escaped from his sleeping apartment by a passage in the wall to the
shore, where a galley was ready to take him to the MacLeod Castle on
Pabbay in the Sound of Harris. The warden of the Castle on Pabbay
refused to receive him, and Iain Dubh set sail for Ireland, where he
wandered in a destitute condition, and finally captured by the O''Donnells
who put him to death. This monster was married, but it does not appear
that he left any surviving issue. [BANNATYNE MANUSCRIPT]
