John MacLeod was probably the first of the family to hold the tack of
Crackinish. He appears in the Estate Papers as "Ean mc Allister
Albinich", "John McAlister awinich" or simply "Johne McAllister" in the
Harris Estate Papers from 1679 to 1685 in the tack of South Caipebhal
(Southton) in the tip of South Harris. After 1685, he disappears from
Harris but it is clear that as early as 1683, he possessed the tack of
Crackinish in Minginish in Skye. There he is identified as "Johne Mc
Allister" or "Ean mc Allister vic Williame". He married his second cousin
Marion, daughter of Norman MacLeod 3rd of Ferinlea, a circumstance
which could have given him the tack in that area. They had issue.
After his death, the family, which was numerous, accompanied their
mother and emigrated to America. Only one of them, Captain Alexander
MacLeod of Vatten and Dunelirich was single on his return from America
in 1783. He married Helen, daughter of William MacLeod I of Ose, with
issue, Flora (died in 1858), who married John Johnston in Edinburgh.
