One of the two leading Macleods in Lewis in the early eighteenth
century, John Macleod (Iain mac Thorcaill) was the tacksman of Hacklete.
In 1726, signing the deposition in a good hand, he deponed that he had
been tacksman of Hacklete for forty years. he was not always content at
Hacklete, and once asked the advice of John Morison whether he should
avail himself of an opportunity to move elsewhere. Morison''s answer, in
verse (surviving in several versions) must have been heeded, for Macleod
stayed at Hacklete. [Matheson (ed.) (1970) pp. 218 & 233-234.]
John Macleod, tacksman of Hacklete from c. 1686, married a daughter of
Murdoch Matheson (Murchadh Mor mac Dhubhghaill mhic Iain Oig mhic
Mhurchaidh Bhuidhe) by his second wife, Christian MacAulay (daughter of
Ian Ruadh, tacksman of Kneep) [Matheson, TGSI (XLVII) pp. 184-188.] with
issue, at least two sons.
It is not known when John MacLeod died. He was succeeded by his
eldest son.
