Although Pabbay and Uig are associated with the Clann Thormoid
generally, it is convenient to retain territorial designation for the
family described here, which family was the only one in the first edition
of this work to have been given a connected pedigree to Norman Og
MacLeod of Baile na Cille. In that connected pedigree Norman Og''s sixth
generation descendant is named Iain Ruadh Mor, and all five of the
intervening generations are also named Iain. However, Iain Ruadh Mor
was born in 1729 [Matheson, TGSI (LI) p. 334, n. 70.], and, as already
noted, Norman Og lived c. 1506, so he may have been born c. 1470. This
gives an average of c. 43 years per generation, which, although quite
possible, might suggest that at least one generation has been ovvitted in
error. Indeed, one such generation is known, for Iain Ruadh Mor''s father
is named in historical record as "John McEan vic Gillichalum" [Ibid.].
Inserting this Gillichalum (Malcolm) into the pedigree brings the average
down to 37 years per generation between Norman Og and Iain Ruadh Mor.
This is quite acceptable age given that Iain Ruadh Mor''s second son,
Donald Ruadh, was not born until 1778, that is forty-nine years after his
father. A revised account of the MacLeods of Pabbay and Uig may,
therefore, be given as follows.
