Family tradition says that young Donald was brought up by "an elderly
aunt", and was well educated according to the standards of the time. He
graduated M.A. at the University of Aberdeen in 1785, [Roll of Alumni in
Arts of the University and King''s College of Aberdeen 1596-1860.

and was appointed Headmaster of the Garrison School at Fort William
before 1790, and remained there for the rest of his life. He married on
9th February 1790, Mary Cameron (who died 26th February 1836),
daughter of John Cameron, Senr., Fuar, Fort William, with issue.
Donald MacLeod died on 17th April 1817, and was succeeded in the
representation of the family of Suardal by his eldest son, Donald.
