Colonel Colin Sherwin is a great-great-grandson of MajorGeneral
William MacLeod of the MacLeods of Arnisdale and Glendale, as shown
above, and was born on 25th June 1908 in Sydney, New South Wales. he
was educated at the Sydney Church of England Grammar School and the
Royal Military College, Duntroon. He studied at the Staff College,
Camberley, in 1938 as an Officer of the Territorial Army. During th
eSecon dWorld War he served on the General Staff and as a Battery and
Regimental Commander of the Royal Artillery, in the Air Defence of Grat
Britain and with 2nd (British Army, in Normandy, France, Belgium,
Holland and Germany. Colonel MacLeod of Glendale was mentioned in
Despatches for his services in North-West Europe and holds the
Territorial Decoration and three clasps.
At the end of the War he returned to Civil Life with the Rank of
Lieutenant Colonel. He formed and commanded for five years 519 L.A..
Regiment Royal Artillery, on the re-constitution of the Territorial Army
in 1946, and was promoted Brevet Colonel in 1951 and Colonel in 1955.
In 1946 Lt. Colonel MacLeod, as he then was, was appointed General
Secretary of The Royal British Legion Scotland, a position which he still
holds.
He was awarded the O.B.E. in 1962.
He matriculated Arms at Court of Lord Lyon on 21st December 1951 and
was officially recognised by the Lord Lyon, King of Arms, as Colonel
Colin Sherwin MacLeod of Glendale, on 17th October 1956.
Colonel MacLeod is President of the Clan MacLeod Society. He married
on 6th April 1937, Margaret Drysdale Robertson, daughter of the
Reverend John Alexander Campbell of Port-na-Haven, Islay, and his wife
Agnes Jane, elder daughter of George Cockburn of Kilchearan, with issue.
