Colin was born in Scotland in 1818 and was educated by the Reverend H.
Bishop, Rector of Ardleigh, Essex.
He emigrated to Australia and left London on 20th December 1835
aboard the ship "Henry Tanner", arriving in Sydney on 18th May 1836 [List
of Vessels Arrived 1836--MS, Mitchell Library, Sydney.].
Colin took up grazing land, 36,000 acres at MacIntyre Brook in the
Darling Downs and called his station "Glenelg".
He was married at St. Phillips''s Church, Sydney, on 17th September
1842 to Alexandria Flora Fraser, daughter of Lieutenant simon Fraser of
the 80th Regiment.
In 1838 he became associated with his cousin, Alexander MacLeod [Son
of Donald MacLeod, 3rd of the Arnisdale Family] and acquired another
property in the Hunter River District of New South Wales, which he
named "Glen Colin". The cousins owned a third property called "Branga
Park" on the Hunter River.
The calamitous times of the 1840s obliged Colin and Alexander to
relinquish their properties and to seek employment in other spheres.
Colin was fortunate in obtaining an appointment as Clerk of Petty
Sessions at Dungog, new South Wales. In 1862 he was given a post of
responsibility in the Immigration Office in Sydney. three years later he
died and the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD of 4th May 1865 reported --
"Deaths: On the morning of 3rd May, at his residence, Crown Street,
Surrey Hills, Colin MacLeod Esq., formally of "Glen Colin", New England,
and only son of Major General William MacLeod of the Madras Army, aged
47 years, leaving a wife and 8 children to deplore thier loss. Beloved
and esteemed by all who knew him."
