Alexander Cameron MacLeod, surgeon, was born on 7th December 1899
and was educated at Haileybury College. He served with His Majesty''s
Land Forces 1918 to 1919 as temporary 2nd Lieutenant R.H. and R.F.A.
After demobilisation he entered the Middlesex Hospital, University of
London, where after qualification in 1925, he held th eposts of
House-Physcian, House-Surgeon, Casualty Surgical Officer and
Experimental Histologist in the Bland-Sutton Institute. He played Rugby
football for the Hospital (Captain, United Hospitals (Captain), Middlesex
County (Honour''s Cap) and London Scottish 1st XV.
He became Clinical Assistant at St Peter''s and St. Mark''s Hospitals and
Demonstrator of Anatomy, King''s College, Strand, London. He was
appointed Consulting Surgeon at Charing Cross Hospital in 1931,
Connaught Hospital, Walthamstow 1934, Hampstead General Hosptial
1937 and Wanstead Hospital 1946.
He served in the R.A.M.C. from 1940 to 1945 and became temporary
Lieutenant-Colonel and Officer-in-charge, Surgical Division, Cambridge
Hospital, Aldershot, from 1940 to 1942, British General Hospitals 92nd,
19th and 15th (Scottish) Middle East Force 1942 to 1945, where he
gained the Africa Star.
He is a Senior Fellow of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain
and Ireland and a Late Fellow of the Medical Society of London, Royal
Society of Medicine and the Hunterian Society. He is also a Late Member
of the Board of Examiners in Dental Surgery (Surgical Section) in the
Royal Collge of Surgeons of England. He became a Member of the highland
Society of London in 1933 and a Past Hon. Vice-President of the London
Branch of the Clan MacLeod Society 1939. He has contributed papers on
Surgical Subjects to the Medical Journals. Retiring on 30th September
1964, he employs his leisure on such favourite recreations as
fly-fishing, music, gardening and walking. Like his father, he is a keen
genealogist on the Clan MacLeod and their researches over many years
into the history of the MacLeods of Pabbay, St. Kilda and Bay, with
characteristic generosity, has been made available for this work.
Alexander Cameron MacLeod 6th of Bay and Gillen married on the 24th
March 1934 at All Souls'' Church, Langham Place, Jean Marjorie (born on
8th October and baptised on 13th December 1913 at St. Thomas'' Church,
Dehra Dun, India), only daughter of Colonel Arthur Charles Fergusson,
C.M.G., D.S.O., R.A. (1871-1958) and his wife Emily Madeleine Strettell,
with issue.
