Joined the army, on 17th September 1773, as Ensign in the 55th
Regiment. He was promoted Lieutenant on 8th September 1775, Captain
on 24th July 1779, Lieut.-Colonel on 14th December 1793, Colonel on
26th January 1797, Brigadier-General on 1799, Major-General on 25th
September 1803, Lieut.-General on 25th July 1810, and General of the
55th Regiment on 20th March 1811. He was Lieut.-Governor of Fort
William, Inverness-shire, and died, in 1814, unmarried.
