!SOURCE: Rev. Dr. Donald MacKinnon and Alick Morrison, THE MACLEODS--
THE GENEALOGY OF A CLAN, Section II, Edinburgh, The Clan MacLeod
Society, 1968, pp. 80, 95-96.
He was the first son of Captain Alexander MacLeod (of the LORD
MANSFIELD East Indiaman), I of Harris, younger brother of Norman
MacLeod VI of Berneray. He spent a considerable part of his life in India,
where he held a lucrative appointment with the Nizam of Hyderabad.
When he returned to Harris in 1802, there was a great demand for land in
the Hebrides and the kelp industry was almost booming. The proprietor
of Harris rejoiced that his shores were "lined with silver". He was
anxious to raise the rents but his tacksmen showed no disposition ot
co-operate with him. In 1807, he brought a successful action against his
cousin, Isabella MacLeod of Berneray. He terminated her tack of the
island and its pertinents and forthwith divided the property among the
crofters. St. Kilda was sold to Lt.-Col. Donald MacLeod of Auchagoyle for
£1,350 in 1804. His name, he changed from MacLeod to Hume and finding
the climate at Rodel uncongenial, he lived in England. Alexander
(MacLeod) Hume II of Harris married Miss Wrangham in India, with issue.
