Studied Medicine and Surgery at Glasgow, and became an outstanding
Surgeon. He was knighted in 1900 in recognition of his distinguished
services as Professor of Clinical Surgery at Glasgow University. He was
honoured by the Universities of St. Andrews and Glasgow, which
bestowed on him the hon. degree of LL. D., in 1911 and 1912 respectively.
He died on 22nd November 1928. He married, in 1872, Frances Stoddart
(who died in 1879), daughter of William Hamilton MacDonald of
Greenknowe, Bothwell, with issue. [See THE MACLEANS OF BORERAY, p.
