Was born, on 28th December 1827, in Drogheda, Ireland, when the 61st
Regiment was stationed there. He went with his parents to Ceylon in
1828, and did not return to England until 1840. He was an exceedingly
bright boy and was one of the first to enter Wellington College. He
passed 1st to Sandhurst, and was commissioned to the 74th Highlanders
(later the 2nd Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry). In the 74th
Regiment he had as brother officers -- Norman Magnus MacLeod
(afterewards 26th Chief of the MacLeods) and Sir Claude MacDonald. He
commanded the 74th in India, when it was highly praised for its
efficiency adn good behaviour. In 1872, he commanded the Regiment in
Malta. At the same time the Black Watch, commanded by his brother,
John Cheetham, was stationed on the island. Major-General William K.
MacLeod held several high administrative posts, including command of
the troops in Malaya. He retired from the army as Lieut.-General, and
was appointed Colonel of the Highland Light Infantry. He died in 1903 at
his home in Upper Norwood, London. He married, in 1851, as his first
wife, Mary Bird (who died in 1866), with issue.
Lieut.-General William Kelty MacLeod died in 1903, and was succeeded
in the representation of the family of Luskintyre by his only son of his
first marriage.
