Tormod (or Norman), who seems to have died before his father, was
married to Fingula (or Flora), the daughter of an Irish chief, by name
MacCrotan. By this lady, he had a son, Norman, who succeeded his
grandfather, Leod, and became the ancestor of the MacLeods of Harris,
Dunvegan and Glenelg, known as Siol Tormoid.
!REVISION: According to earlier sources (i.e., Dougles of Glenbervie, et
al), Leod had at least two sons, Tormod (Norman) -- ancestor of Siol
Tormod, and Torquil -- ancestor of Siol Torquil. However, Morrison, in
the next source, revises that, making Torquil the grandson by a son
named Murdoch, rather than brother, of Tormod (Norman).

Norman had at least two sons: Malcolm (Gillecaluim), ancestor of the
MacLeods of Harris, and recipient in the mid-1340''s of a charter of lands
in Glenelg from King David II. [The Book of Dunvegan, (I) p. 273; E. W.
Robertson, pp. 48, 99, 100.], and Murdoch (Murchadh), who was III of
Lewis, and who married a daughter of the Nicolson chief and thus
acquired lands in Lewis and Assynt.
!OMISSION: Douglas omits this son and generation. See Sir Robert
Douglas of Glenbervie, Baronet, THE BARONAGE OF SCOTLAND, Edinburgh,
1798, p. 375. It is omitted, probably, for good reason -- it never
existed?

He is said to have married Christina, daughter of the Lord of Lovat, and
sister of Sir Alexander Fraser of Cowie, Lord Great Chamberlain of
Scotland in 1319, and by her had issue....
Tradition has it that Norman lived until he was a very old man, and that
his white beard was so long that he had to tuck the end of it under his
girdle. He died, c. 1320, at his castle on the Island of Pabbay in the
sound of Harris, and was buried on Iona. His eldest son, Malcolm,
succeeded him.
!CAVEAT: Prior to 1974, the common tradition of the genealogy of Clan
MacLeod has this Torquil as the second son of Leod. However, there has
been groundbreaking (and tradition smashing) work done by Matheson, in
a paper published by The Gaelic Society of Inverness, (Vol. LI, pp.
320-337) which calls this tradition into question. Picking up on
Matheson''s work, Alick Morrison has produced THE MACLEODS: THE
GENEALOGY OF A CLAN, Section IV, which presents a different picture of
the relationship of Siol Torquil (the Clan name given to the MacLeods of
Lewis) to Siol Tormod (the MacLeods of Dunvegan and Harris). This new
line was further researched by Major Loudoun MacLeod, and Andrew
MacLeod. The result is a second edition of Morrison''s Section IV,
published in 1990. The old tradition, dating back to Robert Douglas of
Glenbervie''s THE BARONAGE OF SCOTLAND, 1798, needs to be replaced by
this new information, which is reflected in this genealogy.
According to the old tradition, the lineage is as follows:
1. Leod
-2. Tormod (Norman) MacLeod, founder of Siol Tormod.
-2. Torquil MacLeod, founder of Siol Torquil.
According to the new information, the lineage is as follows:
1. Leod
-2. Tormod (Norman) MacLeod (ancestor to both Harris and Lewis)
--3. Malcolm (Gillecaluim) ancestor of the MacLeods of Harris.
--3. Murdoch (Murchadh), ancestor of the MacLeods of Lewis.
---4. Torquil (Torcall Og)
