John M. MacLeod was the second son of the Rev. Norman MacLeod, D.D., of
the Barony, Glasgow, and was born on 5th May 1857. Strangely enough
none of the sons of the The Barony Manse chose to follow the family
tradition of becoming a minister. John MacKintosh qualified as a
chartered accountant, at first practising on his own account and later
joining the firm of Kerr, Anderson, Muir and Main, now know as the firm
of Kerr, Anderson & Macfarlan. He devoted much time to social matters,
and was persuaded in 1915 to take up politics. He entered Parliament as
a member for the Central Division of Glasgow, which he served from
1915 to 1918. Afterwards he was a member for the Kelvingrove Division
of Glasgow from 1918 to 1922. He was a Deputy-Lieutenant of Glasgow.
For his many years of services to his native city, he was honoured by the
University of Glasgow with the Doctorate of Laws, and in 1924 the King
conferred a baronetcy upon him. He married, on 4th January 1888, Edith,
third daughter of Joshua Fielden of Todmorden and Nutfield Priory,
Redhill, Surrey, with issue.
Sir John MacKintosh MacLeod, 1st Baronet of Fuinary, died 6th March
1934, and was succeeded in the representation of the family of Fuinary
by his elder son.
