Roderick. In a declaration at Holyrood in 1626, John Mor 16th Chief
stated that ''Rory mc Rory vc Conneill vc Eane'' was dead, and thus, could
not appear in Edinburgh as a hostage for the good behaviour of the Clan.
It can be argued that the Chief of the MacLeods or the clerk of the
Council committed an error in this name, and that instead of ''Froy mc
Rory'', it should have been ''Eane mc Rory''. It hsould haowever be noted
that the same problem is apparent in the case of the Gesto family at this
time. In 1616, Sir Rory Mor was prepared to exhibit Neil MacLeod of
Gesto, or his son, Murdo. In 1619 and 1622, however, it was not ''Murdo''
but his brother ''Roderick'' that was exhibited. The Skye Rentalso
f1683-86, do prove that this was not a mistake and that Roderick, a
member of the Gesto family, did exist. From this analogy, it would
appear, that we must not discard ''Rory mc Rory'' as a member of the
Berneray family. There is good reason to believe John Mor 16th Chief
knew the family well and was hardly likely to commit such an error in
this respect.
