THE GENEALOGY OF A CLAN, Section III, "MacLeod Cadet Families",

John, born in 1757, minister of Benbecula 1773 to1779 and of Harris
from 1779 to 1806. Thereafter he transferred to Kilmodan and
Dundonald. He was educated in Aberdeen, where he was enrolled as a
native of Skye (i.e. Skiensis in Latin). His Alma Mater later granted him
the degree of D.D. in 1795. He was Chaplain to the Long Island Battalion
of The Inverness Volunteers. He was a man of considerable attainments
and wrote a master account of the parish of Harris in the Old Statistical
Account, Volume X, No. 28, in 1794. He was compelled to take action
against John Lane Buchanan, missionary in Harris, for scandalous conduct
unworthy of a clergyman. Buchanan retaliated by publishing a
''scandalous book'' (vide Captain Thomas) which, while it contains
information of some value on the history of Harris, is vitiated by
Buchanan''s virulence against those who justly testified against him in a
properly constituted ecclesiastical court. Buchanan is particularly
hostile to Rev. Dr. John MacLeod, whom he compares unfavourably with a
preceding minister, Rev. Aulay MacAulay (1713-51).
Rev. Dr. John MacLeod married (1) Janet, daughter of Donald Campbell of
Scalpay, without issue. He married (2) Anne MacDonald from Harris,
with issue.
Rev. John MacLeod, D.D., died at Dundonald on 6th February 1841.
