III. MacDonald MacLeod of Grishernish, who married _____, daughter of

1. Norman, his heir.

He was succeeded by his eldest son.
!MENTION: Rev. Dr. Donald MacKinnon and Alick Morrison, THE
MACLEODS--THE GENEALOGY OF A CLAN, Section II, Edinburgh, The Clan
MacLeod Society, 1968, pp. 115, 116.
Donald was born about 1698, and studied for the ministry at King''s
College, Aberdeen, where he graduated M.A. on 9th April 1719 [FASTI
ECCLESIAE SCOTICANAE, VII, pp. 168-9]. After a period as a missionary
in the Island of Benbecula, he was ordained, on 8th October 1725, to
South Uist. He was translated, on 4th May 1736, to North Uist, and, on
13th August 1754, to Duirinish, Skye. He received a tack (presumably a
renewal of his father''s tack) of Greshornish in 1754 for nineteen years.
He died, on 27th December 1759, his death, according to ''Theophilus
Insulanus'', having been foretold by a notable woman-seer some fifteen
days before it took place [A TREATISE ON THE SECOND SIGHT, pp. 22-3].
An obituary in the SCOTS MAGAZINE [SCOTS MAGAZINE, XXII, p. 106.]
describes Mr. MacLeod as a ''gentleman who adorned his profession, not so
much by a literary merit, of which he possessed a considerable share, as
by the constant practice of the most useful and exalted virtues. To do
good was the ruling passion of his heart''. He composed many Gaelic
poems, most of which are lost, but his BEANNACHADH BAIRD, his
encomium to his bride, as she came forth from her bridal chamber on the
first morning of her wedded life, is a poem of great beauty and charm [It
was customary in olden times in the Highlands for a bride on coming
forth from her bridal chamber on the morning after her marriage to be
met by a person to salute her with a ''Bard''s Blessing'', in which her
virtures were extolled and good advice was tendered. On the occasion of
the Rev. Donald MacLeod''s wedding it would appear there was no one
present to pronounce the bridal blessing, and so Mr. MacLeod himself
stepped into the breach. When his bride appeared, he addressed her in
poetical lines of great dignity, grace and felicity. For the Gaelic words,
with an English translation, see Nicolson: SKYE BARDS (1892), pp. 16-8,
also MacKenzie: THE MACLEANS OF BORERAY, pp. 86-8.] The Rev. Donald
MacLeod married, on 6th September 1728, Anne, daughter of the Rev.
John MacLean, minister of North Uist (second son of John MacLean, 8th of
the MacLeans of Boreray, North Uist), with issue. [MacKenzie: THE
MACLEANS OF BORERAY, pp. 85-6.]
The Rev. Donald MacLeod, 3rd of the MacLeods of Greshornish, died on
27th December 1759, and was succeeded at Greshornish, and in the
representation of the family by his elder son.
