Alexander, born on 12th June 1774, sailed from Liverpool to America in
1792. He came under the influence of the Reverend MacKiney, a native of
Ireland, who was a minister at Princeton. Alexander now decided to
study for the Ministry of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of America.
He studied at Union College where he graduated in 1798. For a short
time he was pastor at Wallkill, New York, but his real work was done as
pastor of the First Reformed Presbyterian Church in New York. "Dr.
MacLeod''s Kirk", was a landmark in New York and the fame of his
ministry was carried around the country by hosts of admireres. "His
powers as a pulpit orator were of a high order and his discourses were
prepared with rare analytical skill; every subject he touched was
thoroughly discussed and while strictly orthodox, he exemplified by his
pulpit ministrations that a man can be as orthodox as original". As one
of the Chaplains for many years of the St. Andrew''s Society, Dr. MacLeod
kept in active touch with his countrymen of all classes and was beloved
by them all. He married on 15th September 1805 Mary Anne Agnew, with
