In 1430 it is recorded that King James I of Scotland granted to "Nele
Nelesoun" for his homage and service in the capture of his deceased
brother, Thomas Nelesoun a rebel, the lands of Gerloch and others in the
Earldoms of Ross and Sutherland in the Sheriffdom of Innernys. Neil''s
affairs seem to have prospered and he drove the original proprietors, the
MacBeaths, out of the area and captured their three strongholds, Eilean
Grudigh, Loch Tollie island and the Gairloch Dun. The MacLeods later
added another fortress at Uamh nam Freiceadan or the Cave of the
Watchers. Neil og was married, with issue, a son, Roderick, who
succeeded him.
