!CAVEAT: The genealogy of Clan MacLeod is undergoing revision. This
man is traditionally assigned as son of Tormod (Norman), grandson of
Tormod (Norman), and great-grandson of Leod. However, it is clear that
He should be assigned as son of Tormod (Norman) and grandson of Leod.

Malcolm (Gille-caluim), ancestor of the MacLeods of Dunvegan and
Harris, and recipient (c. 1343) of a charter of lands in Glenelg from
David II. [See THE BOOK OF DUNVEGAN (ed. R.C.MacLeod) I, 275; Robertson,

VII. Malcolm Macleod of Herries, third baron of this family, who got a
charter from king David Bruce, dilecto et fideli nostro Malcolmo, filio
tenebantur tempore patris nostri, 3c. This charter has no date, but was
granted before the year 1359.
Malcolm left three sons.
1. John, his heir.
2. Tormod, progenitor of some families of the name of Macleod in
Herries, who possessed Bernera, before sir Norman Macleod got it from
the family as his patrimony, as aftermentioned.
3. Murdo, ancestor of the Macleods of Gesto, of whom major John
Macleod of general Gordon''s regiment in Holland, is descended.
He was succeeded by his eldest son, John Macleod.

Kilbride, Scotland, 1986.
The BANNATYNE MANUSCRIPT, which is our main authority for the
history of the early chiefs of the Clan MacLeod, says that Malcolm was
''renowned as the greatest hero of his race''. King David II gave him a
charter of Glenelg, [see BOOK OF DUNVEGAN, I. pp. I, 275.] probably as a
reward for services rendered, but the MacLeods were in possession of
Glenelg long before they came to hold it from the King by charter.
Malcolm married a daughter of Sir Neil Campbell of Lochawe, [Alexander
MacKenzie, in his HISTORY OF THE MACLEODS (p. 12), says that Malcolm
married Martha, daughter of Donald, Earl of Mar. It is possible he may
have married her as his second wife.] by whom he had issue....
Chief Malcolm, as he advanced in life, became extremely corpulent, and
was known as CALUM REAMHAR MATH (Good Stout Malcolm). The
MEMORIAL (1767) says that he was called GILLECALUIM CAS REAMHAR
(The Stout-legged Malcolm). While on a visit to his kinsman, MacLeod of
Lewis, Malcolm died in the Castle of Stornoway, and his body was
conveyed to Iona, where it was buried. His death took place c. 1370. He
was succeeded by his eldest son.
