He joined the Indian Army in 1903 and the Guides Cavalry in 1905. He
served in Frontier operations in 1908. In 1914, he went to France and
took part in the battles of Festubert and Ypres. He served as a Brigade
Major in the battle of the Somme, where he earned the D.S.O. In 1916, he
was wounded. he returned to India in 1917 and served in Mesopotamia
from 1917 to 1919. In the latter year, he took part in military
operations in Kurdistan. he was a member of the Staff College in 1920;
the War Office 1921-23; Instructor of the Staff College 1923-35. He
returned to India, where he commanded Cavalry Brigades from 1933 to
1936 and commanded the Army in Burma from 1938 to 1941. He was
promoted Major-General in 1936 and Lieutenant-General in 1941. He
retired in 1942 and was knighted (K.C.I.E.) that year. In 1923, he married
Phoebe Scott Elliot, daughter of John MacDonald, Redcliffe, Portree.
