Biography
!BIOGRAPHY: Sir Robert Douglas of Glenbervie, Baronet, THE BARONAGE
OF SCOTLAND, Edinburgh, 1798, p. 376.
X. John Macleod of that ilk, Herries, &c. a man of great strength of
body, an undaunted spirit, and great resolution. He accompanied Donald,
Lord of the Isles, to the bloody battle of Harlaw, where he behaved
gallantly, anno 1411. He is mentioned in a charter from king James IV
hereafter narrated.
He married a daughter of the family of Douglas, and by her had two sons
and one daughter.
1. William, his heir.
2. Tormod, whose direct male heir was William of Meidle, named in
the destination of the estate made by sir Roderick Macleod, anno 1611,
herein after-mentioned; but the male line of that William is now failed.
Of this Tormod are also descended the Macleods of Drynoch, Balmeanich,
and the tribe called Slichd Jaine Vicloid, &c.
His daughter, Margaret, was married to Roderick Macleod baron of
Lewes.
He died in the island of Balby in Herries, in the beginning of the reign of
king James II, and was succeeded by his eldest son, William Macleod.
!BIOGRAPHY: Rev. Canon R. C. MacLeod, THE MACLEODS OF DUNVEGAN
(1927), p. 66. Rev. Dr. Donald MacKinnon, MACLEOD CHIEFS OF HARRIS
AND DUNVEGAN, Edinburgh, The Clan MacLeod Society, 1969, p. 13. Alick
Morrison, THE CHIEFS OF CLAN MACLEOD, East Kilbride, Scotland, 1986.
John, who was scarcely ten years of age when he succeeded his father,
grew up to be a man of great stature, strength and undaunted courage,
and was known as Iain Borb (John the Turbulent). He commanded the
MacLeods at the battle of Harlaw in 1411, and was wounded in the
forehead. Many years afterwards, when on a visit to his Castle on
Pabbay, he took part in a friendly fencing match with his foster-brother,
Somerled MacCombich. During the contest, according to the BANNATYNE
MANUSCRIPT, the ''wound in his forehead burst out with such violence
that the bleeding could not be stopped. A swift galley was dispatched
for a leech, but before he could arrive, Iain had expired''. This happened
in 1442. Iain Borb married a grand-daughter of the Earl of Douglas
(probably James, 3rd Earl, who died in 1401 [Note: The 3rd Earl of
Douglas was Archibald the Grim, not James.), with issue....
Iain Borb died in the Island of Pabbay, as already stated, and was
succeeded in the chiefship of the MacLeods by his son.

MacKinnon, Portree, Skye, Scotland, 1929, reprinted by The Clan MacLeod

7.
This branch of MacLeods is descended from John (Iain Borb), sixth Chief
of the MacLeods of Dunvegan, who lived from about 1392-1442. An
interesting account of this Chief of Dunvegan may be found in the
"History of the MacLeods," by the late Alexander MacKenzie, Inverness
(pp. 13, 14), and in "The MacLeods of Dunvegan," by Rev. Canon R.C.
MacLeod of MacLeod (pp. 60-67). He was married to Margaret,
granddaughter of the Earl of Douglas. By this lady, he had two sons,
William and Norman, and two daughters.
From Norman, John Borb''s second son, came the family known as
"Sliochd Iain MhicLeoid," who maintain that their progenitor, Norman,
was the elder son, and should have succeeded to the Chiefship on the
death of Iain Borb, instead of William. MacKenzie and Canon MacLeod
contend that William was the older son.

John (Iain Borb), his successor as chief, already dealt with in Section 1
of these genealogies. This chief was very fond of the island of Pabbay,
where he extensively repaired the Old Castle, and later, accidentally met
his death.
