Married Ann Barss Smith, whose mother was a daughter of Captain
Joseph Barss, Sen., the privateer captain mentioned above, and sister of
Captain Joseph Barss, Jr., who while skipper of the LIVERPOOL PACKET,
captured 100 United States ships in three months of the War in 1812. He
was captured and spent two years in prison in the U.S.A., where he was
regarded as a Pirate because his Letters of Marque were alleged to be
unauthorised. He was released on parole but when the ship on which he
was a passenger was taken, he was imprisoned for two more years for
alleged breach of parole. Ann Barss Smith was also descended from
Captain Alexander Godfrey, the forerunner of privateering in Liverpool,
who furnished 11 of the 30 Canadian privateers in the American War of
1812. Ann''s father was also descended from Stephen Hopkins, a Pilgrim
on the Mayflower in 1620. James B. MacLeod and Ann Barss Smith had
issue.
