Ian Francis Norman… was born on 25th September 1921.
He joined the army in 1940, when he was scarcely nineteen years of
age, and went to Egypt with the Intelligence Corps, and received his
captaincy before he was twenty-one. He served throughout the
successful advance of the Eighth Army in North Africa, was the
organiser of a special unit which in the early days of the Italina
campaign scouted far ahead of the Allied Forces, and gathered much
information, made plans with the inhabitants awaiting liberation and
reconnoitred for the advancing army. To the great regret of all those
who knew him and worked with him, he died, on 29th April 1944, at
Naples, from blood poisoning, twenty-three years of age. Sir Ian F. N.
MacLeod, 3rd Baronet of Fuinary, was succeeded in the representation of
the MacLeod family of Swordale and the baronetcy of Fuinary by his
uncle.
