Douglas Hamilton, M.S., F.R.C.P., F.R.C.S., F.R.C.O.G., ...was born on 9th May
1901 and died in 1970. He entered Haileybury College, where he proved
himself a keen Rugby player, later playing for his Hospital, Middlesex
County and the Harlequins. The call of the blood in him was strong with
a great-grandfather as Surgeon-General in the Madras Presidency of the
Honourable East India Company, a grandfather, father and brother, all
Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons. He entered Middlesex Hospital
in 1920 and qualified in 1925. He served as house-surgeon to the then
Mr. Alfred Webb-Johnson, followed this with a house Physiciancy and the
resident obstetric post. In 1927, he obtianed the M.R.C.P. and became the
Medical Registrar to the Middlesex Hospital. In 1928, he became the
R.M.O. at Chelsea Hospital for Women and in 1929 the Obstetric and
Gynaecololgical Registrar at the Middlesex Hospital. In is Obituary
Notice in THE TIMES (February 4th 1970), to which the writer is indebted
for these particulars on this outstanding gynaecologist, appeared the
following statement. "Not many gynaecologists can claim the triple
crown of the three Royal Colleges although some may acquire these in
later life by election; MacLeod was awarded his Fellowships of the
Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons by industry and examination. To
these he added the M.S. He was one of the star pupils of Victor Bonney''s,
the master of abdomino-pelvic surgery. He graduated via the Hospital
for Women, Soho Square, to a full consultancy at St. Mary''s Hospital.
Here he worked with Alec Bourne and Leslie Williams to form one of the
most remarkable gynaecological triumvirates in London. His wise and
experienced opinion was eagerly sought not only in this country but as
far afield as the Middle East. Douglas MacLEod was not only a beautiful
gentle and meticulous operator but he also possessed that rare surgical
virtue of using his head in conjunction with his hands. He became a
member of the Highland Society of London in 1938 and was a Past Hon.
Vice-President of the London Branch of the Clan MacLeod Society in
1939. He wrote widely on his speciality and was the co-author of TEN
TEACHERS'' MIDWIFERY AND DISEASES OF WOMEN, QUEEN CHARLOTTE''S
TEXTBOOK OF OBSTETRICS and BONNEY''S GYNAECOLOGICAL SURGERY. In
addition, "he found time for the arduous and ill-rewarded task of
examining".
Douglas Hamilton MacLeod married on 26th April 1933 Lesley Frances,
elder daughter of the late T. Martine Ronaldson, Esq., Portrait Painter,
and his wife Dorothy Gertrude Louise Milner, with issue.
