He was born, on 10th June 1848, at Borhoneyghurk, Moorabool, Victoria,
and was educated at Scotch College, Melbourne. As a young man, he
engaged in stock and station pursuits on the South Australian border, and
then went to the northern part of Western Australia, where he
commenced pioneering operations at Nichol Bay, and opened up large
territory. Donald Norman was one of the first to penetrate this part of
Western Australia, and led a number of exploring parties into the
hinterland. He formed a station, which he named ''Chiritta'', near
Roebourne. In 1882, he returned to Victoria after a successful career in
Western Australia and purchased an estate at Portland. Here he
practically pioneered the dairying industry according to modern methods.
He interested himself in local and State politics, being a Councillor for
the Shire and Borough of Portland, and later he became the
representative for Portland in the Victorian Legislative Assembly.
About 1901, he bought Minilya Station near Carnarvon, Western
Australia, and lived there. He married, in 1870, Charlotte Bussell (a
daughter of one of Western Australia''s earliest pioneers), who died, on
11th August 1926. They had issue.
Donald Norman MacLeod , 10th head of the family of Talisker, died, on
25th October 1914, at Perth, Western Australia, and was succeeded in
the representation of the family by his second son.
