Old Angus and his brother Norman made a penitential journey to the
continent. The trip abroad, though fraught with considerable danger, was
no doubt interesting as well as enlightening. Old Angus apparently found
favour with the Pope with the resutl that he built the first Christian
Church in Assynt about 1460. The site of the building is the old Kirkyard
of Inchnadamph, where the Barons of Assynt of old used to be buried. It
is now in a ruinous state.
Old Angus married a daughter of Malcolm Beag MacKintosh, widow of
Alasdiar mac Ruairidh, Alexander Matheson of Lochals who had been
beheaded on Castle Hill, Edinburgh, shortly after 1437. margaret was
thus the tutrix to her eldest son and controlled extensive property. This
marriage brought Old Angus neither wealth, peace, nor happiness. He had
issue by this marriage to Margaret of Lochals. The fear that the estate
of Lochalsh would be carved up and merged into the Barony of Assynt
roused Young Lochalsh to action. He managed to flee to his grandfather
Malcolm Beag MacKintosh and soon returned with a powerful force of the
Clan Chattan, which overthrew, captured and put Old Angus to death. Old
Angus and Margaret of Lochalsh had issue.
